Appeal to Support Progressive Judaism in Ukraine

Some 23 years ago, Alexander Dukhovny visited Dublin and led services in our synagogue. At that time he was a student rabbi at the Leo Baeck College in London. On completion of his studies, he returned to Kyiv and soon became the Chief Progressive Rabbi of Ukraine. Before the start of the Russian invasion there were 47 Progressive and Reform congregations in the country.

Watch the video above to listen to a heart rending message Rabbi Dukhovny sent from a basement in Kyiv. It was recorded a just few days before he managed to flee to Moldova.

With Ukraine in grave peril, DJPC set out to provide as large a donation as possible to assist those in need of support. Both World Jewish Relief (WJR) and the World Union for Progressive Judaism (WUPJ) launched Ukraine Crisis Appeals, and we decided to send funds raised via the WUPJ.

To get the ball rolling, Council committed a significant sum from the shul in the hope that members and friends would find it in their hearts to give generously to those in dire need. By the end of a week we had collected over €10,000 which has already been transferred to WUPJ.

However, it is never too late to contribute, so if you haven’t already done so, please transfer your donation to us by electronic banking — clearly marked UKRAINE — without further delay
